Another night of AM Dxing

On 17th February 2022, I did another night of Medium Wave DXing. This time I logged sixteen (16) Australian stations and one (1) confirmed overseas station – China National Radio CNR6, and possibly two (2) other overseas stations (not confirmed).

AM broadcast stations

Tonight (16th February 2022) I decided to see if I could log some DX on the Medium Frequency (MF) band. I managed to log a total of thirty-nine (39) Australian stations and one (1) station in China.

I was a little disappointed that only one overseas station made it into my log. But I then thought about how we here in Australia really do take ‘size’ for granted. A few of the Australian stations I logged were about 1,500 – 2,100 km away. In some parts of the world that would definitely be called DX, across multiple countries.

Australia is a big country. It is about 4,000 km east to west and about 3,200 km south to north. The whole of Europe and the United Kingdom easily fits inside Australia, as the map below shows.

CNR6 is located in Quanzhou, Fujian, CHINA and is a 300kW station.

And here is a video of CNR6. I was pretty excited about hearing this station.

So although not overly successful in logging a bagful of overseas stations, I did have a lot of fun. After hearing China, I am now hooked by the AM DX bug.

Voice of America – 15580 kHz

At about 0638 UTC on Sunday 12th February 2022, I tuned in to Voice of America broadcasting in the English language on 15580 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Selebi-Phikwe 100 kW transmitter in Botswana in Africa.

The overall reception of VOA was good.

Radio Kuwait – 15430 kHz

At about 0605 UTC on Sunday 12th February 2022, I tuned in to Radio Kuwait broadcasting in the English language on 15430 kHz.

The overall reception of Radio Kuwait was good. However the signal appeared to be drifting between 15430 and 15425 kHz

China National Radio CNR13 – 15390 kHz

At about 1004 UTC on Saturday 12th February 2022, I tuned in to China National Radio CNR13, broadcasting in the Uyghur language on 15390 kHz.

The Uyghurs are a Turkic ethnic group originating from and culturally affiliated with the general region of Central and East Asia. The Uyghurs are recognized as native to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. They are one of China’s 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities.

Below are two very interesting videos about the Uyghur’s.

The broadcast was coming from the Lingshi 725 100 kW transmitter in southwest central China.

The overall reception of CNR13 was good. The signal strength was fair-good and there was no interference from other stations.

Radio France International – 15300 kHz

At about 0951 UTC on Saturday 12th February 2022, I tuned in to Radio France International, broadcasting in the French language on 15300 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Issoudun 500 kW transmitter in France.

The overall reception of Radio France International was good. The signal strength was good and there was no interference from other stations.

Radio Farda – 13600 kHz

At about 0918 UTC on Saturday 12th February 2022, I tuned in to Radio Farda, broadcasting in the Persian language on 13600 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Radio Farda Lampertheim 100kW transmitter in Germany.

The overall reception of Radio Farda was fair. The signal strength was fair, but there was significant interference from China National Radio CNR1 on 13610 kHz.

Voice of Korea – 7580 kHz

At about 1018 UTC on Friday the 11th February 2022, I tuned in to the Voice of Korea, broadcasting on 7580 kHz in the Japanese language.

The broadcast was coming from the Kujang 200kW transmitter.

The overall reception of the Voice of Korea was excellent. The signal strength was excellent and there was no interference from other stations. There was virtually no fading of the signal.
