Ilbon-ui Baram / Furusato no Kaze- 15475 kHz

At about 1322 UTC on Tuesday the 1st day of August 2023, I tuned in to Ilbon-ui Baram broadcasting on 15475 kHz in the Korean language. At 1330 UTC, the Japanese language broadcast Furusato no Kaze commenced.

The station has been on air since July 2007. It is produced by the Japanese government agency ‘Headquarters for the Abduction Issue’, targeting Japanese citizens that are believed to have been abducted to North Korea between 1977 and 1983. The Japanese language broadcast is known as Furusato no Kaze (English: Wind from the Homeland), while the Korean language broadcast is known as Ilbon-ui Baram (Japanese: Nippon no Kaze; English: Wind from Japan).

The broadcast was coming from the Tashkent 100kW transmitter in Uzbekistan.

The overall reception of Ilbon-ui Baram was good. There did appear to be some form of interference on the frequency, possibly deliberate. The World Radio TV Handbook 2023 reports that the station is often jammed.

KBS World Radio – 15575 kHz

At about 1301 UTC on the 1st day of August 2023, I tuned in to KBS World Radio South Korea broadcasting on 15575 kHz in the English language.

The broadcast included a news report, info on KBS 70 year anniversary, and a current affairs program.

The transmission was coming from the 250 kW Kimjae transmitter in South Korea.

The overall reception of KBS World Radio was good.

Radio Slovakia International – 15770 kHz

At about 0632 UTC on the 1st day of August 2023, I tuned in to Radio Slovakia International broadcasting on 15770 kHz in the Spanish language.

Radio Slovakia International commenced broadcasting on the 4th day of January 1993, following the independence of Slovakia. Radio Slovakia International has ceased broadcasting on shortwave from Slovakia but is now relayed on WRMI frequencies including 15770 kHz.

The overall reception of Radio Slovakia International was poor-fair.

Alcaravan Radio, Colombia – 5910 kHz

At about 0838 UTC on the 30th day of July 2023, I tuned in to Alcaravan Radio Colombia broadcasting on 5910 kHz in the Spanish language.

The overall reception of Alcaravan Radio was fair.

Voice of the Strait – 4900 kHz

At about 1146 UTC on the 28th day of July 2023, I tuned in to the Voice of the Strait broadcasting on 4900 kHz in the Chinese language.

The Voice of the Strait was founded on the 24th day of August 1958 and is located in Fuzhou City in Fujian province. Its predecessor was the PLA Fujian Front Line Broadcasting Station.

The station is owned by the People’s Liberation Army of China. The target audience is Taiwan. In 2015 the unit which operates Voice of the Strait was transferred from the People’s Liberation Army General PoliticaDepartment to the People’s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force which is primarily responsible for psychological warfare operations against Taiwan.

The Voice of the Strait website states:-

The Voice of the Straits has become an air bridge for spreading news and information and communicating cross-strait emotions with the concept of sincere communication, rich and colourful content, and lively and diverse forms.”

Radio 567 XRN Australia – 4970 kHz

At about 1128 UTC on the 28th day of July 2023, I tuned in to the Radio 567 XRN Australia broadcasting on 4970 kHz in the English language. This was a new station for me.

Radio 567 is part of the X Radio Network (XRN) and broadcasts from Wee Waa, New South Wales. According to the XRN Facebook site the power is 100 watts and the antenna is an inverted L.

The overall reception of Radio 567 was good. The program was Rock N Roll Memories – 1960s rock and roll music.

Ilbon-ui Baram (Nippon no Kaze) – 9650 kHz

At about 1327 UTC on the 22nd day of July 2023, I tuned in to Ilbon-ui Baram broadcasting on 9650 kHz in the Korean language.

The station has been on air since July 2007. It is produced by the Japanese government agency ‘Headquarters for the Abduction Issue’, targeting Japanese citizens that are believed to have been abducted to North Korea between 1977 and 1983. The Japanese language broadcast is known as Furusato no Kaze (English: Wind from the Homeland), while the Korean language broadcast is known as Ilbon-ui Baram (Japanese: Nippon no Kaze; English: Wind from Japan).

The overall reception of Ilbon-ui Barm was fair. There was a very evident ‘jamming’ signal on the frequency. There was also some ‘bleed over’ interference from China National Radio CNR1 on 9660 kHz.

Radio Exterior de Espana – 15520 kHz

At about 1458 UTC on Saturday the 22nd day of July 2023, I tuned in to Radio Exterior de Espana broadcasting on 15520 kHz in the Spanish language.

The broadcast was coming from the 200kW transmitter in Noblejas.

The overall reception of Radio Exterior de Espana was good. The signal progressively became stronger during the broadcast. Overall reception at the start of reception was fair.

At about 1441 UTC on Saturday the 22nd day of July 2023, I tuned in to Trans World Radio India broadcasting on 13690 kHz in the Hindi? language.

Trans World Radio India commenced broadcasting in 1978.

Radio Marti – 6030 kHz

At about 0741 UTC on the 22nd day of July 2023, I tuned in to Radio Marti broadcasting on 6030 kHz in the Spanish language.

Radio Marti is a USAGM funded service for listeners in Cuba. It was launched in May 1985 and is produced by Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

The broadcast was coming from the 125 kW transmitter in Greenville, USA.
