At about 1534 UTC on 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to Radio Tamazuj, SUDAN broadcasting on 15150 kHz.

Radio Tamazuj covers South Sudan, the southern states of Sudan, and the borderlands between the two countries. Tamazuj means ‘intermingling’ or ‘mixing’ in Arabic. The name was originally coined for the mix of cultures that span the borderlands between Sudan and South Sudan.

The overall reception of Radio Tamazuj was very good.

Dimsti Weyane Tigray, ETHIOPIA – 15160 kHz

At about 1513 UTC on 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to Dimsti Weyane Tigray, ETHIOPIA, broadcasting in the Tigrinya language on 15160 kHz.

Dimsti Weyane is headquartered in Mekelle, Tigray. The Tigray Region, officially the Tigray National Regional State, is the northernmost regional state in Ethiopia. The station broadcasts programs in various categories including educational, entertainment, political, socio-cultural, documentaries, news and news analysis.

The broadcast was coming from the Issoudun 250 kW transmitter in France.

At times there was a siren type noise on the frequency, possibly a jamming signal.

Radio Free Europe – 9470 kHz

At about 1431 UTC on Saturday 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to Radio Free Europe, broadcasting in the Tajik language on 9470 kHz.

Radio Free Europe’s mission is “to promote democratic values and institutions and advance human rights by reporting the news in countries where a free press is banned by the government or not fully established.” 

The broadcast was coming from RFE’s Lampertheim 100kW transmitter in Germany.

WBCQ, USA – 9330 kHz

At about 1409 UTC on 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to WBCQ, USA, broadcasting in the English language on 9330 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Monticello 250 kW transmitter.

The overall reception of WBCQ was excellent. The signal strength was very good. There was some interference from the Voice of America broadcasting in the Khmer language on 9335 kHz.

WINB, USA – 9265 kHz

At about 1351 UTC I tuned in to WINB, USA, broadcasting on 9265 Khz in the English language.

World International Broadcasters Inc (WINB) is a brokered Christian shortwave radio station licensed to Red Lion, Pennsylvania, USA. WINB commenced broadcasting in October 1962, making it the oldest private shortwave radio station in the United States that is still in operation.

The broadcast was coming from the Red Lion 50KW transmitter.

KTWR GUAM – 7510 kHz

At about 1328 UTC on Saturday 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to KTWR GUAM, broadcasting in the English language on 7510 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Agana 100kW transmitter. The broadcast consisted of the Unlimited Grace program and religious music.

The overall reception of KTWR was poor. The signal strength was good, however, there was severe interference on the frequency which sounded like a jamming signal.

Peoples Broadcasting Station PBS Xizang, CHINA – 7450 kHz

At about 1226 UTC on Saturday 22nd January 2022, I tuned in to the Peoples Broadcasting Station PBS Xizang, CHINA. They were broadcasting in the Chinese language on 74450 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Lhasa 100 kW transmitter.

The overall reception of PBS Xizang was fair. There was some bleed over from China Radio International broadcasting in 7440 kHz in Chinese. There were also moderate static crashes on the band from local storms.

Voice of America Deewa – 7495 kHz

At about 1434 UTC on 21st January 2022, I tuned in to the Voice of America Deewa, broadcasting in the Pashto language on 7495 kHz.

VOA Deewa is a USAGM funded service for Pashto speaking listeners in northwestern Pakistan along the border with Afghanistan. It was launched on 29th September 2008 and is produced in VOA studios.

Deewa means ‘light’ in Urdu.

The VOA Deewa website states that VOA Deewa “provides news and information to the critical Pakistan/Afghanistan border region where more than 50 million Pashtuns live. The region lacks local independent sources of information on regional, international and U.S. politics. Military narrative, jihadi agenda and extremist groups are dominant in the state and private media market. VOA Deewa reaches this critical region via digital platforms, direct-to-home satellite, radio, and the Internet.”

The overall reception of VOA Deewa was excellent.

Voice of Mongolia – 12085 kHz

At about 1019 UTC on 17th January 2022, I tuned in to the Voice of Mongolia, broadcasting on 12085 kHz. Up until 1030 UTC, their broadcast was in the Chinese language. At 1030 UTC their Japanese language program commenced.

The broadcast was coming from the Voice of Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar 250 kW transmitter. The program consisted of music.

The overall reception of the Voice of Mongolia was good. The signal strength was good and there was no interference from other stations.
