The Voice of the Strait was founded on the 24th day of August 1958 and is located in Fuzhou City in Fujian province. Its predecessor was the PLA Fujian Front Line Broadcasting Station.
The station is owned by the People’s Liberation Army of China. The target audience is Taiwan. In 2015 the unit which operates Voice of the Strait was transferred from the People’s Liberation Army General Political Department to the People’s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force which is primarily responsible for psychological warfare operations against Taiwan.

At about 1327 UTC on the 22nd day of July 2023, I tuned in to Ilbon-ui Baram broadcasting on 9650 kHz in the Korean language.
The station has been on air since July 2007. It is produced by the Japanese government agency ‘Headquarters for the Abduction Issue’, targeting Japanese citizens that are believed to have been abducted to North Korea between 1977 and 1983. The Japanese language broadcast is known as Furusato no Kaze (English: Wind from the Homeland), while the Korean language broadcast is known as Ilbon-ui Baram (Japanese: Nippon no Kaze; English: Wind from Japan).

The overall reception of Ilbon-ui Barm was fair. There was a very evident ‘jamming’ signal on the frequency. There was also some ‘bleed over’ interference from China National Radio CNR1 on 9660 kHz.
