2022 ALARA Contest

Last weekend (Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th 2022) was the 32nd ALARA Contest for the Australian Ladies Amateur Radio Association (ALARA).

My wife Marija VK5MAZ is the ALARA Contest Manager.

Marija and I had a number of other commitments over the weekend. Marija spent most of Saturday out in the garden and on Sunday we went for a drive down to Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island in the 72 Chrysler VH. It was such a beautiful sunny day for a ‘cruise’.

Marija did manage a few hours on Saturday afternoon and a few hours again on Sunday afternoon for the ALARA Contest.

Marija ended up with 201 QSOs and a claimed score of 648 points.

2022 ILLW weekend

The 2022 International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) was held over the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August 2022.

I was unable to get out to activate a lighthouse this year, so whenever possible I snuck out to the shack to work some of the lighthouses.

I worked a total of 22 Australian lighthouse activators.

Adventist World Radio – 12105 kHz

At about 1200 UTC on 24th August 2022, I tuned in to Adventist World Radio broadcasting in the Amoy language on 12105 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Tashkent 100 KW transmitter in Uzbekistan.

The overall reception of the Adventist World Radio was good.

Reach Beyond Australia – 12010 kHz

At about 1157 UTC on 24th August 2022, I tuned in to Reach Beyond Australia broadcasting in the Tsangla language on 12010 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Kununurra 100 KW transmitter in Western Australia.

The overall reception of the Reach Beyond Australia was good. There was some ‘bleed over’ interference from Voice of Vietnam on 12020 kHz.

Voice of Vietnam – 9840 kHz

At about 1017 UTC on 21st August 2022, I tuned in to the Voice of Vietnam broadcasting in the English language on 9840 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Hanoi Sontay 100 KW transmitter in Vietnam.

The overall reception of the Voice of Vietnam was good. There was some ‘bleed over’ interference from RTM Sarawak on 9835 kHz.

PBS Gannan, CHINA – 3990 kHz

At about 1150 UTC on 23rd July 2022, I tuned in to PBS Gannan broadcasting in the Tibetan language on 3990 kHz.

The broadcast was coming from the Hezou 15 KW transmitter in China.

The overall reception of PBS Gannan was good. At 1200 UTC interference was experienced from China National Radio on 3985 kHz.
